When our family was created through adoption, I had no idea what a journey this was going to be. Not just the adoptive journey but also the learning. For example, learning about transracial parenting and how to care for our first daughter, Keely, who has Afro-textured hair.
My first lessons in haircare came from Keely’s birth mom, who showed me some braiding basics and products that she used. Keely was not born with a lot of hair, so initially, haircare was pretty easy. As an adoptive mom to two daughters who have different hair and skin care needs than I do, I feel it is my responsibility to learn as much as possible about their hair and skin care needs in order to incorporate this into my care for them as a parent. To do otherwise is not respectful to their origins, heritage, culture and community….Corinne and Keely’s Hair Story .
