We had a fantastic time at the facial threading cafe launch party, January 24, 2012. Facial threader & aesthetician Iti Rai was on hand. She demonstrated her art of threading and many first time guests were able to try out the service. We also enjoyed authentic Indian Chai tea, made by Iti. The tea was a great treat. Then there was erotic chocolate. Yes! Delicious and fun. Click and download, facial threading cafe, to learn more about this service. We look foward to serving you. 250-592-3482.
Ryerson University’s news magazine interviewed Nichola Watson about her hair; specifically on wearing her hair in an Afro. Click onto this link http://bit.ly/yQ7LzV. and go to page 7 for the story.
Sefirah writes, “As someone who has always been a practical shopper, I like to know where my money is going. As the owner of a set of dreadlocks which are now a year and a half, I struggle with the usual dry, itchy scalp that comes along with them. Over the year and a half I have tried a variety of shampoos, some specifically made for dreadheads with the itches, which only made my scalp more dry and irritated. After taking home and using the Jamaican Mango & Lime Tingle Shampoo, I am thrilled to announce that I am no longer on the hunt! Finally, a product that does what it says it will! The cooling sensation quenched my thirsty scalp and was just what it needed! It left my head feeling soothed, nourished and of course, tingling, as promised. Also, the fact that it’s green is fun and different!” Products sold at Afro Diva Hair Salon
“With my three friends, Abby and Chrissy, we are raising money for Opportunity International to give mini-loans to women to help them out of poverty. How and Why? I’ll start with the How; We are wearing one shirt and one pair of shoes for a 100 days. The shirt is representing the very small amount of clothing poor people have compared to us, and the shoes are representing that 50% (300 million of them are children) of the world doesn’t own a pair of shoes, and if they do it’s only one pair. By doing this we’re trying to place ourselves in their shoes, literally.
We’ll be going around door-to-door in our neighbour-hoods raising money and hold various events at our church to raise money. The Why; Well, it’s rather simple, for the glory of God. Thank you for your time!” For more information visit http://www.opportunitycan.ca/champion/champion.aspx?asset=749

How will I know when it is time to wash my child’s hair? Paying attention to your child’s behavior is important. If he or she is scratching the scalp a lot, then it may be time for a wash. There are other factors to consider to help determine when to wash your child’s hair. Some of these factors include, how active your child is, the weather, and if he or she is taking medication. Your child’s scalp must be cleaned and their hair should always be washed. You, the parent should develop a washing routine. Washing your child’s hair should be a lot of fun. It should not be painful for your child and it should not be stressful for you. At Afro Diva we offer one-on-one workshops to parents on “care for their child’s Afro-textured hair”.
Community participation is essential at Afro Diva. Thank you for your generous contribution. We contributed time, money, and or gifts to the following organizations;

When our family was created through adoption, I had no idea what a journey this was going to be. Not just the adoptive journey but also the learning. For example, learning about transracial parenting and how to care for our first daughter, Keely, who has Afro-textured hair.
My first lessons in haircare came from Keely’s birth mom, who showed me some braiding basics and products that she used. Keely was not born with a lot of hair, so initially, haircare was pretty easy. As an adoptive mom to two daughters who have different hair and skin care needs than I do, I feel it is my responsibility to learn as much as possible about their hair and skin care needs in order to incorporate this into my care for them as a parent. To do otherwise is not respectful to their origins, heritage, culture and community….Corinne and Keely’s Hair Story . See picturesend us your hair story, we would love to hear from you. nichola@afrodiva.ca

Nichola is one of Afro Diva’s hairstylists. Last year after numerous requests from parents of Afro-textured hair children, she designed workshops and classes specifically to their children’s hair care needs. We had the pleasure of working with Corinne and her beautiful daughter Keely. They made the trip from Vancouver and spent the morning learning about Keely’s hair type, washing procedure, combing out processes, daily maintenance and much more.
Keep an eye out for Corinne’s post about her experience at Afro Diva. Here are some pictures. Corinne & Keely website blog

According to Karissa Josok, “The wall hanging was originally designed by Liz Faminoff, a Canadian Artist who makes her home in Grand Forks. When I stepped into our local quilt shop to see what was new, there was Liz’s wall hanging up on display and it took my breath away. I love the color, the action, the attention to detail. But mostly I love the warm colors in the fabrics which make it FEEL like you could be transported into a little African village with these beautiful tall graceful women going to market. I have taken several of Liz’s quilting courses and this one was my absolute favorite. It was a lot of fun to design and pull together. Each woman is uniquely designed with different dress and purpose. Is this woman going to market? Is she going to sell goods or make purchases? Is she going to draw water from the local well? Is she simply going to get the latest gossip from a friend? Or is she going to get her hair braided? Countless hours are put into each wall hanging and each one will turn out differently, although the outline will remain the same. The price of a quilt would be $1500 and it would take up to three weeks to complete.” Thank you Karissa for thinking of Afro Diva. We love our beautiful Quilt.

This is a quote from my absolute favourite Canadian author, Lawrence Hill’s, book Black Berry, Sweet Juice p.100. The narrative is by Cindy Henwood from an interview that Lawrence did for the book in 1999. “Why is hair a big deal? I think it’s one of the primary things that you’re judged by in terms of beauty standards. I think that from the time you’re a little girl, you see that a lot of media coverage focuses on the traditional North American view of what is beautiful, and that has always been long, probably blond, flowing hair. As little girls we see that in books, we see that on television. It’s very clear to us, I think, at a young age, that long, flowing hair is what is considered to be beautiful. It’s very difficult for most black women to achieve that look ….. So I think it’s a source of a lot of pain for a lot of young black girls or girls of mixed race. Although I would say that for girls of mixed race, it’s a little bit easier to achieve that look. In the black community, a lot of mixed-race girls are considered to have ‘good hair,’ which is longer hair, the texture not quite so ‘nappy.’ Black men perpetuate that idea and go after the girls with the long, straight hair.” Find Lawrence Hill’s books and read about him at http://www.lawrencehill.com/

Afro Diva opened its door over a year ago. Guests continue to gasp in astonishment about our well constructed space and structural foundation. Meet Shane Sahota of Ironclad Renovations, who worked tirelessly and created our gorgeous space. Working with us and numerous subcontractors he ensured that all necessary permits, licenses, inspections, were in place and that our space was and remains functional. My understanding is that many building contractors has difficulties working with meager budgets. In this instance, Shane could have rejected our proposal; however, he accepted and worked tirelessly to renovate our beautiful space. I have never asked Shane what the experience was like for him, mainly because, I am afraid to hear that a bit more money and work bodies would have been helpful. Or, he may have said that he loved the experience. I am certain that he will inform me sooner than later. It is evident, through clients’ reaction, that our space is truly a work of art. Many have stated that the space “surpassed their expectations and it speaks of creativity and reflects true beauty”. I agree. In addition to tearing down and constructing solid structural foundations Shane’s completed work was also beyond our expectations. After having completed his con-tract, he visited us several times to ensure that our space continue to work for us. Shane maintained the heritage of the space. Yet you will experience contemporary and warmth throughout the structural land-scape. Thank you Shane for all that you endured throughout this process…. “With a Commerce Degree and background in contract management, Shane is able to recognize all aspects of the job and deliver favourable results”.

When you hear the word “pageant” physical esthetics and external beauty are some of images that come to mind. However, Saturday, October 23rd African Eloquent Pageant was about 10 young intellectuals, ages 13-17 sharing their rich African Heritage and talents. It was a competition that captured and celebrated youth, culture, and with an Afro-Canadian theme.
Ten handsome and beautiful young men and women dressed in African attire waited in anticipation as they were introduced with the country they represented. Each participant took the audience on a magnificent journey of the continent of African. The countries covered were Liberia, South African, Nigeria, Egypt, Congo, Zambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Ivory Coast.
Next it was about the participants’ individual talents. Wow!!!! Amazing does not quite capture the altitude of each expression. They danced, sung in French and or English, shared paintings, read short story, drummed, and recited poetry. Think about what you were doing at such a young age. Was there ever a time when you gave a speech, shared a talent, and then stood in front of judges and answered a question of unknown source all in one night? Maybe not!!!!! This was the case for these brilliant young minds.
From beginning to the end there no one doubted that sixteen year old Aliya Mitchell would come out on top. From the moment she entered the stage to deliver her speech on Nigeria to her electrifying and powerful modern dance, which she choreographed, she had the audience memorized. In the question and answer segment Judge Moussa Magassa asked Aliya to give one word that describe self. Determined was the answer. Need I say anymore? Aliya took home $500 in prizes and a $125 cash prize. One of those prizes was a gift certificate from Afro Diva, which included a braiding session with stylist Nichola Watson.

On Saturday, May 21, from 3-5PM enjoy free 15 minute sessions of scalp massage. I apply massage to my scalp each week. It provides increased blood flow that stimulates my follicles in such a way that allow my hair to grow faster. Last summer, while testing some products, a patch of my hair fell out. I was devastated. I massaged Jamaican Black Castor Oil onto my scalp and within six months my hair grew back. The natural oil improved the strength and flexibility of my hair. It also protected my hair from damage and split ends by keeping a nice coat of protective oil on the hair shaft. The oil you use depends on your texture and type of hair and your hair needs…..
My body was experiencing a high level of mid-back pain due to stress and anxiety; which was reflected in the form of stiffness in my muscles. I decided to see aesthetician andspa therapist Ruth Bartesko. I booked the Stress Reliever Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage. I did not explain the situation. She was able to identify my knotted spots, due to differences in firmness and tightness throughout my back. With my complete massage, I no longer felt aching pain. My stress was relieved because her massage technique relaxed and revived my muscles. I felt rejuvenated and confident to face the situation. It was as though I needed an emotional release to improve balance in my body and mind. There are numerous benefits for Therapeutic Massages, such as massage improves blood circulation, relieves tension, increases oxygen flow, boosts immune system, clears the mind..and so much more

Deborah R. Lilly writes, “We all know that a healthy diet is important for our children. But getting children to eat what we want them to, in many cases, can be a problem. We either have children to who like to eat everything or those who are very picky. An unhealthy diet can contribute to hair breakage, slow hair growth, dry hair, and hair loss. The best way to feed the hair is to feed the body properly. A good to give your child a healthy body is to balance the essential nutrients, such as fats, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins….
Starting your child’s day with a healthy breakfast is always very important, so try to prepare a meal that your child will enjoy, like a nice bowl of oatmeal with raisins, which are rich in iron. You may want to alternate the oatmeal a few days a week with an egg and cheese sandwich on whole-wheat bread; add some ketchup or whatever condiment your child likes. Many studies have shown that children who eat breakfast perform better in school and have more energy than children who do not eat breakfast.
Since hair is made of protein, foods rich in protein will contribute to healthy hair and skin. You should regularly serve your child protein-rich foods, such as poultry, oatmeal, lean red meats, and seafood, as well as foods that contain iron, zinc, copper, and iodine. Make sure your child is receiving all the vitamins a growing body needs. Foods that are rich in B vitamins include cheese, eggs, fish, whole grains, beans, and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin A is found in sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and papaya. Foods that have vitamin C are very important as well, as include citrus fruits, tomatoes, melons, and strawberries. Calcium-rich foods like cheese, milk, kidney beans, and yogurt are also recommended for your child’s diet.
When ever possible, we should avoid giving our children foods that re high in fat or sugar, and should minimize their intake of starches and fried foods. Children who are sluggish have slower blood circulation, which doesn’t promote healthy bodies and hair. So by starting your child off on a healthy diet, you are forming a foundation for continued healthy bodies and hair. So by starting your child off on a healthy diet, you are forming a foundation for continued healthy eating, which is beneficial in important ways.” Book Name: Wavy, Curly, Kinky; Fun Ways to Take care of Your Child’s Hair

At AFRO DIVA innovation and creativity are imbedded in all that we do. One salon treatment idea suggested by credible and curious personnel’s was the “Brazilian Blowout”. All the information pointed to a method that seemed too good to be true. However, we had one major concern; finding research material to solidify the celebrity pandemic that ensued. The trusted salon personnel’s and AFRO DIVA staff, that we consulted, knew very little about the treatment and recommended that we delay offering this service.
Brazilian Blowout is perhaps best known for its keratin-smoothing straightening treatments used on frizzy or curly hair. The cost of each treatment is $250 minimum. What an amazing technology that would magically fulfill clients wishes of life without frizzy hair. Fortunately team AFRO DIVA decided to wait and continue gathering research. In October, researchers from Oregon and Health Canada issued public alerts describing the negative health impact of the “Brazilian Blowout”, and advised salons to stop providing the treatment.
The beauty industry is highly competitive with continuous ideas. One of our key objectives is to offer products, services, and treatments that are credible and grounded in research. Most importantly both the health and safety of our clients and staff are paramount to our operation. In essence, AFRO DIVA is and will always be about Beautiful “U”… Read more in the NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER

Today, when I travel to places with beautiful beaches, if I have my hair braided I will venture into the water; however, if I am wearing a weave the water will not go beyond the length of my hair. How about you? Tell me about your hair experience. You will note on our website that you can blog us. Nichola
